What conditions does Vetoryl treat?
It is used to treat pituitary-dependent and adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease and syndrome).

How does Vetoryl work?

It contains Trilostane, which inhibits the enzyme system 3 beta hydroxysteroid isomerase so blocks the production of cortisol, corticosterone and aldosterone. The reduction in glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid steroids in the adrenal cortex so the circulating concentration of these are reduced.

 How should I administer Vetoryl to my pet?
It is given my mouth, so orally

Women who are pregnant or are intending to become pregnant should avoid handling the capsules.

Wash hands with soap and water following accidental exposure and after use.

The content of the capsules may cause skin and eye irritation and sensitisation. Do not divide or open capsules: in the event of accidental breakage of the capsules and contact of the granules with eyes or skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice and show the package leaflet/label to the physician.

People with known hypersensitivity to Trilostane or any of the excipients should avoid contact with the veterinary medicinal product.

What is the correct dosage of Vetoryl for my animal's weight and species?

The correct dose for your animal is as prescribed by your vet. Your vet will follow the data sheet for the medication prescribed and for some medications will adjust this taking into consideration your animal's medical history.

How long should I continue with Vetoryl for?

You should continue for the length of time your vet prescribed the medication for, usually for life. Please read the label your vet has attached to the medication. If you suspect that your pet may be having an adverse reaction to a medication, please contact your vet for advice on continuing the medication.

What are the side-effects of Vetoryl?
Uncommon (1 to 10 animals / 1,000 animals treated): Lethargy, Anorexia Vomiting Diarrhoea

Rare (1 to 10 animals / 10,000 animals treated): Hypoadrenocorticism, Hypersalivation, Bloated, Ataxia, Muscle tremors, Skin disorders, Renal insufficiency, Arthritis

 Very rare (<1 animal / 10,000 animals treated, including isolated reports): Weakness, Adrenal necrosis, Sudden death

Can Vetoryl cause kidney failure?

It can unmask pre-existing kidney disease which is why baseline blood tests should be done prior to treatment. Kidney failure can happen for a variety of reasons.

Should Vetoryl be given with or without food?
It should be given with food.

 Is there an alternative to Vetoryl?
Speak to your vet regarding whether any other treatments are available, such as surgery.

Is Vetoryl a steroid?
No.

Can Vetoryl cause pancreatitis?
Dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) are prone to pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is not on the list of adverse reactions to the drug.

How long does Vetoryl take to work?
This varies between individuals. The dose may need to be adjusted according to individual response, repeat tests should be done after 10 days, 4 weeks and 12 weeks and then every 3 months.

Lethargy can occur if the level of drug is too high. There are many causes of lethargy, however, so please contact your vet if you have concerns.

How long do Vetoryl side effects last?
It is usually metabolised out of the body after 12 hours but if being withdrawn due to side effects it is best to not treat again for a full 7 days, then start at a lower dose. Follow your vet’s advice.

Is Vetoryl safe for dogs?
It is licensed for use in dogs with careful frequent monitoring by repeated blood tests and observation of clinical signs.

What if Vetoryl doesn't work?
The dose can be adjusted. The diagnosis should be re-evaluated.

Can Vetoryl cause seizures in dogs?
Muscle tremors is a possible adverse reaction but seizures is not mentioned in the data sheet.
