What are the side-effects of Prednidale?
Prednidale 5 mg tablets for dogs and cats:
Administration of single high doses are generally tolerated well, but medium to long-term use may provoke reactions.
Corticosteroid therapy may lead to increased time in the healing of wounds and to a reduction in the ability of the body to resist infection. Appropriate anti-infective therapy may be required.
Prednidale 25 mg tablets for dogs:
Anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, such as prednisolone, are known to exert a wide range of side effects. Whilst single high doses are generally well tolerated, they may induce severe side-effects in long term use. Dosage in medium to long term use should therefore generally be kept to the minimum necessary to control symptoms.
The significant dose related cortisol suppression noticed during therapy is a result of effective doses suppressing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis. Following cessation of treatment, signs of adrenal insufficiency can arise, and this may render the animal unable to deal adequately with stressful situations.
The significant increase in triglycerides noticed can be a part of possible iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) involving significant alteration of fat, carbohydrate, protein and mineral metabolism, e.g. redistribution of body fat, increase in body weight, muscle weakness, wastage and osteoporosis may result. Cortisol suppression and an increase in plasma triglycerides is a possible side-effect of medication with corticoids. Weight gain has been reported in very rare cases, in post-authorisation experience.
Changes in biochemical, haematological and liver parameters. Changes in haematological parameters have been reported in rare cases and changes in biochemical and liver parameters in very rare cases. Polyuria and polydipsia (urinating more and drinking more) have been reported in rare cases and polyphagia (eating more) in very rare cases, and may be caused by systemically administered corticosteroids, particularly during the early stages of therapy. Sodium and water retention and hypokalaemia (low potassium levels) may be caused by some corticosteroids in long term use. Hypokalemia has been reported in very rare cases.
Deposition of calcium in the skin (calcinosis cutis) has been caused by systemic corticosteroids.
Wound healing may be delayed during corticosteroid use and the immunosuppressant actions may weaken resistance to or exacerbate existing infections.
Gastrointestinal ulceration has been reported in very rare cases in animals treated with corticosteroids in post authorisation experience and may be exacerbated by steroids in animals given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Inhibition of longitudinal growth of bones; skin atrophy; diabetes mellitus; behavioural disorders (excitation and depression), pancreatitis, decrease in thyroid hormone synthesis; and increase in parathyroid hormone synthesis are other adverse reactions that may occur. Excitation has been reported in very rare cases, in post authorisation experience.
The frequency of adverse reactions is defined using the following convention:
- very common (more than 1 in 10 animals treated displaying adverse reaction(s))
- common (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 100 animals treated)
- uncommon (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 1,000 animals treated)
- rare (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 10,000 animals treated)
- very rare (less than 1 animal in 10,000 animals treated, including isolated reports).
Is Prednidale the same as Prednisolone?
Yes, it contains Prednisolone.
How long does Prednidale take to work?
The exact time it takes to work is not stated in the datasheet, however a response is usually seen within a few hours when used to treat allergic reactions and within a few days when used to treat other conditions, or sooner.
Is Prednidale a steroid?
It is a corticosteroid.
Can humans take Prednidale?
No, they are a veterinary drug licensed for cats and dogs
Can Prednidale cause black stools?
Yes it can, as an adverse side effect of gastrointestinal ulceration.
Can Prednidale completely remove a cancerous tumour?
This is usually used in combination with other drugs in a chemotherapy protocol to have the best effect on tumours that respond to it. It can be used alone just to help but won’t remove a tumour by itself.
Can Prednidale treat gardia?
No.
Can you overdose a dog on Prednidale?
If you give more than the prescribed dose, this would be considered an overdose and could lead to adverse effects so please contact your vet if you have given more than the prescribed dose.
Do you need to take Prednidale for cats with food?
No, it is advised on the datasheet to give orally by mouth, mixing with food is not specifically mentioned as a way of giving it.
Does Prednidale cause weight loss?
It tends to lead to weight gain as it can make cats and dogs hungrier. It can however, over time, lead to muscle loss. If your pet is losing weight, then please contact your vet.
Does Prednidale damage the kidneys?
It should not be used in animals that have kidney problems, as it alters electrolyte balances and fluid balance.
Does Prednidale give pain relief?
It is not a pain killer, although it may make cats and dogs more comfortable by reducing inflammation, such as in a skin condition for example.
How long can a dog stay on Prednidale?
For as long as your vet prescribes it.
