What conditions does Laxatract Syrup treat?
For the treatment of constipation (e.g. due to intestinal atony after surgery, hairballs, massive intestinal contents).
For the symptomatic treatment of disease conditions which require facilitated defecation (e.g. partial obstructions due to for example tumours and fractures, rectal diverticulum, proctitis and poisoning)
How does Laxatract work?
It contains lactulose which is a disaccharide (galactose/fructose) that is not hydrolysable by mammalian gut enzymes. Upon reaching the colon, lactulose is metabolized by the resident bacteria resulting in the formation of low molecular weight acids (lactic, formic and acetic acid) and CO2. These acids increase osmotic pressure drawing water into the bowel causing a laxative effect.
How should I administer Laxatract Syrup to my pet?
The veterinary medicinal product can be mixed with feed or given directly into the mouth. Follow the directions on the label attached by your vet.
This veterinary medicinal product contains benzyl alcohol. This preservative may cause hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions. People with known hypersensitivity to benzyl alcohol should avoid contact with the veterinary medicinal product. Wash hands after use. In case direct contact with skin or eyes should occur, rinse with clean water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
What is the correct dosage of Laxatract Syrup for my animal's weight and species?
The correct dose for your animal is as prescribed by your vet. Your vet will follow the data sheet for the medication prescribed and for some medications will adjust this taking into consideration your animal's medical history.
How long should I continue with Laxatract Syrup for?
You should continue for the length of time your vet prescribed the medication for. Please read the label your vet has attached to the medication. If you suspect that your pet may be having an adverse reaction to a medication, please contact your vet for advice on continuing the medication.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Laxatract Syrup?

Can Laxatract Syrup be used for long term use?
If it is effective and necessary to treat a long-term condition.
Can Laxatract Syrup cause constipation and/or diarrhoea?
It is to help alleviate constipation, it could lead to soft faeces.
What are the side effects of Laxatract Syrup?
Signs of flatulence, gastric distention, cramping, etc. are common early in therapy, but generally abate with time. Diarrhoea and dehydration are signs of (relative) overdose; if this occurs, a veterinarian should be consulted.
The frequency of adverse reactions is defined using the following convention:
- very common (more than 1 in 10 animals treated displaying adverse reaction(s))
- common (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 100 animals treated)
- uncommon (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 1,000 animals treated)
- rare (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 10,000 animals treated)
- very rare (less than 1 animal in 10,000 animals treated, including isolated reports)
How long does Laxatract Syrup take to work?
It can start to work the same day it is given, the time taken to work depends on extent of the medical problem.
Can Laxatract Syrup be given to cats?

Is Laxatract same as Lactulose?
Yes, it contains lactulose, but it has a license for dogs and cats.
