Fortekor Questions

What conditions does Fortekor treat?

Dogs - treatment of congestive heart failure.

Cats - reduction of proteinuria associated with chronic kidney disease.

How does Fortekor work?
It contains Benazapril, which reduces the blood pressure and volume load on the heart in dogs with congestive heart failure.

In cats with experimental renal insufficiency, the veterinary medicinal product normalized the elevated glomerular capillary pressure and reduced the systemic blood pressure.

Reduction in glomerular hypertension may retard the progression of kidney disease by inhibition of further damage to the kidneys. Placebo controlled clinical field studies in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have demonstrated that the product significantly reduced levels of urine protein and the urine protein to creatinine ratio (UPC); this effect is probably mediated via reduced glomerular hypertension and beneficial effects on the glomerular basement membrane.

How should I administer Fortekor to my pet?
It is a tablet to be given orally, by mouth.

What is the correct dosage of Fortekor for my animal's weight and species?

The correct dose for your animal is as prescribed by your vet. Your vet will follow the data sheet for the medication prescribed and for some medications will adjust this taking into consideration your animal's medical history.

How long should I continue with Fortekor for?

You should continue for the length of time your vet prescribed the medication for. Please read the label your vet has attached to the medication. If you suspect that your pet may be having an adverse reaction to a medication, please contact your vet for advice on continuing the medication.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Fortekor?

If you miss a dose of medication, please contact your vet for advice on when to give the next dose.

Are there any side effects of Fortekor?

Adverse reactions (frequency and seriousness)

Dogs:
Rare (1 to 10 animals/10,000 treated - Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Anorexia, Fatigue)

Very rare (1 animal/10,000 treated elevated blood creatinine level, incoordination).

Cats:

Rare (1-10 animals/10,000 treated) vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia, dehydration, lethargy)

Very rare (<1 animal/10,000 animals treated) Elevated creatinine level, increased appetite, weight gain).

In double-blind clinical trials in dogs with congestive heart failure, the veterinary medicinal product was well tolerated with an incidence of adverse reactions lower than observed in placebo-treated dogs.

In cats and dogs with chronic kidney disease, the product may increase plasma creatinine concentrations at the start of therapy. A moderate increase in plasma creatinine concentrations following administration of ACE inhibitors is compatible with the reduction in glomerular hypertension induced by these agents, and is therefore not necessarily a reason to stop therapy in the absence of other signs.

The veterinary medicinal product may increase food consumption and body weight in cats.
