What conditions does Caninsulin treat? 
It is used to treat Diabetes mellitus in dogs and cat (sugar diabetes) 

 

How does Caninsulin work? 
It contains insulin, the hormone which is missing if your pet develops diabetes , so acts to replace this hormone. 

 

How should I administer Caninsulin to my pet? 
You administer it either via a Vetpen, which contains cartridges of the product or by injecting your pet under the skin with it. You will need training on how to do this so, make sure your vet or Registered Veterinary Nurse has shown you how to do this.

What is the correct dosage of Caninsulin for my animal's weight and species? 

The correct dose for your animal is as prescribed by your vet. Your vet will follow the data sheet for the medication prescribed and for some medications will adjust this taking into consideration your animal's medical history. 

 

How long should I continue with Caninsulin for? 

You should continue for the length of time your vet prescribed the medication for. Please read the label your vet has attached to the medication. If you suspect that your pet may be having an adverse reaction to a medication, please contact your vet for advice on continuing the medication. 

 

What should I do if I miss a dose of Caninsulin? 

If you miss a dose of medication, please contact your vet for advice on when to give the next dose.

What is Caninsulin? 
Caninsulin is a prescription medication which contains insulin as an injectable suspension for use in dogs and cats. 

 

How long can Caninsulin be left out of the fridge? 
Only for the time it takes to give the injection, it should be stored between 2 and 8 degrees Centigrade in a fridge. 

 

How long does Caninsulin last? 
It should be replaced every 28 days after opening. In the body its duration varies and can only be determined by blood glucose monitoring, it is often given twice daily for maintenance but sometimes once a day. 

 

How long does Caninsulin last in the fridge? 
28 days. 

 

Are alternative unbranded needles for Caninsulin Vetpen available? 

You need to use the needles provided with the pen. 
 

Can you discard Caninsulin vials in glass bin? 
It is safest to return the empty vial to your vet practice in case there is any insulin remaining in the vial. 

 

Are Caninsulin vials recyclable? 
No, as they contain residues of a prescription medicine, they should be disposed of in a vet’s speacial glass bin. 

 

Can Caninsulin be left out overnight? 
No, it may well loose effectiveness as it should be stored between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius in a fridge, so the safest thing is to ask for a replacement vial. 

 

Can Caninsulin Vetpen cause nausea? 
This isn’t a reported side effect, although it is possible if an allergic reaction is occurring. 
Side effects include sometimes an injection site reaction, also rarely an allergic reaction. 
 

Can you re-use Caninsulin syringes? 
No. 

 

Does Caninsulin go bad? 
It can lose its effectiveness or become susceptible to infection getting into it if kept more than 28 days once opened.
