It is a prescription medication licensed for dogs and cats containing Prednisolone, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid used to treat allergies and inflammation. Also used to treat, usually in combination with other drugs, some types of cancer and auto-immune diseases.

How does Prednicare work?

It contains prednisolone which is a corticosteroid which has anti-inflammatory activity.

How should I administer Prednicare to my pet?

It is a tablet to be given orally, by mouth. Impermeable gloves should be worn whilst administering the product.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling this product.

What is the correct dosage of Prednicare for my animal's weight and species?

The correct dose for your animal is as prescribed by your vet. Your vet will follow the data sheet for the medication prescribed and for some medications will adjust this taking into consideration your animal's medical history.

How long should I continue with Prednicare for?

You should continue for the length of time your vet prescribed the medication for. Please read the label your vet has attached to the medication. It should not usually be suddenly stopped, usually the dose is gradually reduced to a stop at the end of treatment. If you suspect that your pet may be having an adverse reaction to a medication, please contact your vet for advice on continuing the medication.

What are the side-effects of Prednicare?

Anti-inflammatory steroids, such as prednisolone, are known to exert a wide range of side-effects. Whilst single high doses are generally well tolerated, they may induce severe side-effects in long-term use and when esters possessing a long duration of action are administered. Dosage in medium to long term should therefore generally be kept to the minimum necessary to control symptoms. Steroids themselves, during treatment, may cause Cushingoid symptoms involving significant alteration of fat, carbohydrate, protein and mineral metabolism, e.g., redistribution of body fat, muscle weakness and osteoporosis may result.

During therapy, effective doses suppress the Hypothalamo-Pituitreal-Adrenal axis. Following cessation of treatment, symptoms of adrenal insufficiency extending to adrenocorticol atrophy can arise and this may render the animal unable to deal adequately with stressful situations. Consideration should therefore be given to means of minimising problems of adrenal insufficiency following the withdrawal of treatment, e.g., dosing on alternate days, dosing to coincide with the endogenous cortisol peak (i.e., in the morning with regard to dogs and in the evening with regard to cats) and a gradual reduction in dosage (for further discussion see standard texts).

Systemically acting corticosteroids may cause polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia, particularly during the early stages of therapy. Some corticosteroids may cause sodium and water retention and hypokalaemia in long term use. Systemic corticosteroids have caused deposition of calcium in the skin (calcinosis cutis).

Corticosteroids are not recommended for use in pregnant animals. Administration in early pregnancy is known to have caused foetal abnormalities in laboratory animals.

Administration in late pregnancy may cause early parturition or abortion.

Corticosteroids may delay wound healing and the immunosuppressant actions may weaken resistance to or exacerbate existing infections. In the presence of bacterial infection, anti-bacterial drug cover is usually required when steroids are used. In the presence of viral infections, steroids may worsen or hasten the progress of the disease.

Gastrointestinal ulceration has been reported in animals treated with corticosteroids and gastrointestinal ulceration may be exacerbated by steroids in patients given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and in corticosteroid treated animals with spinal cord trauma.

Steroids may cause enlargement of the liver (hepatomegaly) with increased serum hepatic enzymes.

How long does Prednicare take to work?

The exact time it takes to work is not stated in the datasheet, however a response is usually seen within a few hours when used to treat allergic reactions and within a few days when used to treat other conditions, or sooner.

Is Prednicare the same as Prednisolone?

Yes, it contains Prednisolone.

Can dogs be allergic to Prednicare?

It is unlikely that signs of an allergic reaction to the medication would be seen as the drug is used to treat allergic reactions. In theory, however, an allergy can develop to any medication.

Can I dissolve cat Prednicare in water?

The datasheet does not say whether it is as effective if crushed in water or not. Please speak to your vet for further advice.

Can I get Prednicare tablets for dogs without a prescription?

No.

Can I mix Prednicare and Ronaxan?

If your vet has prescribed both to be given together, then yes.

Can my dog take Prednicare with Piriton?

Yes, if your vet prescribes them together.

Can Prednicare be given mixed with food?

The datasheet does not say whether it is as effective if crushed in water or not. Please speak to your vet for further advice.

Can Prednicare shrink a tumour?

Prednisolone may help shrink certain tumours, which are corticosteroid responsive.

Can Prednicare tablets cause my dogs legs to twitch?

This isn’t a side effect specifically mentioned in the datasheet.

Can Prednicare tablets make my dog sick?

It could do as gastrointestinal ulceration is a reported adverse reaction. Contact your vet if your dog is vomiting.

Can you take Prednicare with Ranitidine?

If your vet has prescribed it, yes.

Do dogs pee a lot when on Prednicare tablets?

An adverse reaction can be drinking more and so then urinating more.

Do I give Prednicare tablets with food?

The datasheet does not specifically say to give with food, just to give orally (by mouth).

Does Prednicare have an accumulative effect?

The dose is weight related to reach a steady level in the blood stream, rather than a gradually increasing level.

Does Prednicare make dogs hungry?
Yes, this can be a side effect. Don’t feed your dog any more or it will gain weight.

How does Prednicare improve lymphoma?

It can, but it is usually used in combination with other drugs in a chemotherapy protocol. However, if the pet owners don’t want full chemotherapy, then it is sometimes used to be of some help.

How long can a cat stay on Prednicare 5mg?

For as long as your vet prescribes, depending on your cat’s individual medical condition.

How long does it take to wean off a dog on Prednicare?
