What conditions does Felimazole treat?
Felimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism in cats.
How does Felimazole work?
The drug brings down the level of thyroid hormones by reversibly inhibiting the enzyme thyroid peroxidase to control excessive production of the hormones T3 and T4.
How should I administer Felimazole to my pet?
It comes as a sugar-coated tablet so is best given whole, orally, as directed by your vet.
Wash hands after use.
In the case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately and show the package insert or the label to the physician. Thiamazole may cause vomiting, epigastric distress, headache, fever, arthralgia, pruritus and pancytopaenia. Treatment is symptomatic.

Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling the tablet or used litter.
Do not handle this product if you are allergic to anti-thyroid products. If allergic symptoms develop, such as a skin rash, swelling of the face, lips or eyes or difficulty in breathing, you should seek medical attention immediately and show the package leaflet or label to the doctor.
Do not break or crush tablets.
As thiamazole is a suspected human teratogen, women of child-bearing age and pregnant women should wear gloves when handling litter of treated cats. Pregnant women should wear gloves when handling the product.
What is the correct dosage of Felimazole for my animal's weight and species?
The correct dose for your animal is as prescribed by your vet. Your vet will follow the data sheet for the medication prescribed and for some medications will adjust this taking into consideration your animal's medical history.

What is Felimazole?
It is a licensed drug containing Methimazole and Thiamazole for use in cats to treat hyperthyroidism.
Does Felimazole have side effects?
Treating hyperthyroidism with any form of treatment can lead to deterioration of renal disease so cats need regular blood testing to check their kidneys.
Any serious effects of Felimazole are mainly reversible once the medication is stopped. Some effects are mild and transitory.
Side effects include vomiting, reduced appetite or not eating, weight loss, lethargy, itchiness and skin ulcerations, jaundice due to effects on the liver, blood changes such as affecting red cells leading to them breaking down (haemolysing), a drop in white cells or platelets.
These effects reverse within 7-45 days of stopping therapy. Monitoring by blood tests of blood changes should be done before treating, and again after 3, 6, 10, 20 weeks and then every three months while on treatment.
Some immunological side effects include anaemia, and enlargement of lymph nodes. If this happens treatment should be stopped.

Stabilising your cat on the correct dose can take some time and needs monitoring with blood tests. Sometimes the initial dose needs to be adjusted. Once the level of Thyroxine in the blood is in the correct range you will usually notice changes withing 3-4 weeks.
